Can the wire bail handle be removed from the lid?

The wire bail is not connected to the lid but to the Dutch oven itself

Is the 13 1/4 inch a top or bottom of pot measurement? I need to know measurement across diameter of BOTTOM of pot.

That is external top diameter, not counting wing handles or lip tab on one side. Outside bottom is approximately 11 inches in diameter. (Slightly rounded edges. :))

Can a whole chicken fit in it?

Yes this is an excellent vessel for ANYTHING that fits. Until you become accustomed to it size, try a medium size chicken first. I love this unit.

can this pot be used in a capfire - directly on the coals? Would oven with legs be bettet for this?

Ys this can be put directly on the coals of a fire. The dutch ovens with legs and flat, rimmed tops are made specifically for use in fire pits. Remember to cook in the coals and place some of the coals on top, that what the rim is for. This model will work if you have a couple of bricks in the fire to give it stability.
