The material is good quality. I chewed on one for a good five minutes trying to damage the rubber as I do with all of my shoes but it held up to the chewing. The do not smell like rubber, they do not feel like rubber, and they are not anti-skid. What they do seem like is some sort of synthetic, man-made material which is closer to slick than to "anti-skid". I definitely would not wear them to a "pool party" (or anywhere wet) for fear of face planting! If these are made from some sort of synthetic rubber they should just honestly say that in the description.
