Best for Struggling 13-15 year-old Readers (not 8-10 year-olds reading up)
I think this book would be great for struggling readers who are in their early teens. A lot of the themes appeal to readers of this age category: 1) Adults are all incompetent. 2) For the main character, girls are interesting, mysterious, and a little scary. 3) Social hierarchy at school is consuming. The text is easy to read and follow, pretty funny, and keeps you engaged with cliff-hangars at the end of each chapter. The themes are older; the reading level is younger (maybe 4th or 5th grade).I read this to test it out for my 9-year-old son, and I don't love it as much for him. First, the profanity is unnecessary and annoying. Maybe it hooks in the teenagers, but every time I read a curse word I thought about a PG movie with curse words added in by the editor at the end so that it could get a cooler PG13 rating. Second, I don't love that there are literally zero competent or inspiring adults in the book. The teachers put the students to sleep because they are so boring. The grown spies play right into the hands of the enemies. Even the main character's parents seem not to ask any questions about him being recruited to a "boarding school for scientists" and never being able to see him. And he's 12.I might let my son read this, but not without a big conversation about the themes and discussions along the way.

If you object to profanity in a book for 8 year olds.. give this a miss!!
I'm writing to give parents a heads up! I purchased this for my 10 yr. old grandson who loves to read suspense and mystery genre books. The age recommendation was given as 8-12. I got a text from my daughter in law today telling me that there is objectionable language in the book, she was pretty surprised by it and so of course am I. I had read reviews on the book and found no reference to this. Needless to say, the additional titles I got for future gift giving won't be given. I think that the age level for these books is inappropriate for the content, and misleading! I'm very disappointed with this purchase!

DON'T LISTEN TO THE ONE STARS
***DISCLAIMER*** I read this book when I was 9. It honestly is not anything someone 9 or 10+ cant read. However, if you are easily scared of things like assassins, this series might not be for you. This book series is incredible. Stuart Gibbs somehow mixed the magic of both Artemis Fowl and Harry Potter perfectly. This book series deserves to be among both series as the greatest books of all time. One of the reasons this book shines is because it isnt from the perspevtive of some famous or powerful person. It's perspective is from your average middle school kid in an average school. It is great because it shows how you don't have to be anyone special to do great things. Another reason is because it will quite literally make you fall out of your chair in a fit of laughter. In short, should you read this? YES.P.S. you better hit the this was helpful button cuz i just typed that whole thing on a KINDLE

Scary, sets a bad example.
My 8 year old couldn’t go to sleep after reading 2 chapters. Until 3AM! The words murder, assassins, torture, weapons, and nerve gas spear multiple times on each page. The character hates school and is a glorified underachieving whiner. Needless to say my son loved it. However I have conveniently misplaced the book.

Too good to be true...
I am 9 years old and loved this book so much. It is a good book full of details that will keep your eyes glued to the pages! This is a perfect book for boys and girls. It will keep you at the edge of your chair. I recommended the serie to my class. You might give up playing video games to read this book. It is a very funny book and filled with plenty of action. Tell your mom to buy the second book as soon as you start the first one because trust me you won't want to wait.

Great spy story!
I read this to my 9 yr old, who LOVES any spy stories and he said this is one of his favorites. We are now reading Spy Camp (the sequel to Spy School). My only complaint is the cursing...I could skip over the words since I was doing to reading, but I would not recommend it for young children if they are reading it themselves. It is beyond me why they feel the need to put that kind of language in children's literature!

Kiddo loves this series
Bought this for a kiddo starting to lose interest in reading for pleasure. They loved this book and read right through it. Had to hustle and buy the next in the series because she read it so fast. Seems like a neat series.

He also is a great reader so finding larger books that are age appropriate ...
My son is 10 and loves all things spy. He also is a great reader so finding larger books that are age appropriate can be difficult. He LOVES these books.

Great story
My 5 year old son loved having Spy School read to him night and day until we finished it. Will suit children who also read to themselves. Will definitely purchase more books written by this author.
