It's better if you've waited a while between purchases of NCAA

*by A***M on Reviewed in the United States on July 18, 2012*

I haven't purchased NCAA from EA Sports since 2010, so this was a nice upgrade, there were definitely some improvements over the 3 years. If you have NCAA 2012 you won't find much different in this game, I've played it numerous times as a rental--you're not really going to find too much in 2013 that's going to make you feel good about plunking down 45-60 bucks if you already have 2012. If it's been a while since you purchased NCAA (because you got tired of every new game feeling like last year's game with somewhat different rosters and somewhat different team ratings) then you could pick up 2012 used cheaper than 2013 new and get essentially the same game.********************** What I like: The ability to switch up conference alignments--let's face it, that's about the most exciting thing that's happened to college football (up until they just announced the 4 team playoff system) in quite a while. It was, entertaining (whether you were happy about it or not) to try and figure out who was going where and which conferences would survive. NCAA 2013 let's you move teams into different conferences before every season--this allows you to keep up with whatever comes next in the real world and it let's you have some fun making conferences look the way you want. It's also a vast improvement over 2010 that your team's playing style affects recruiting--if you spend all your time running the ball you'll find, as the season goes on, that any top notch wide receiver you had on your draft board will notice that you're not throwing much and he'll start to lose interest in signing with your school. You'll also find that if you start out as a really awful team (which is what I like to do) more 3 and 4 star recruits will show an interest in your school when you make it to 7-0 than were interested when you were 1-0.The in-game scores showing at the bottom of the screen are a nice touch--but it's a little absurd when a game that was showing as a final when my game was in the second quarter is suddenly back in the first quarter 20 minutes later. The ability to modify player attributes during the season--long overdue, I like to lower skill sets on some players if they're having too easy of a time racking up stats and make it a little more challenging. I also like ramping up players on other teams the week I play them--making it more difficult, then setting them back to normal after the game.Recruiting is overall a serious improvement from older versions (again, 2012 is at pretty much the same level). I'm especially happy to see that your school's standing on things like TV coverage and Campus Life improve as your team improves. Let's face it--if some mediocre school becomes a good team in football money will flow in, academics gets some $, facilities gets some $, school prestige goes up--like it or not, that's the way it is. The $ donations to the University of Missouri from graduates and from businesses went up in all areas once they joined the SEC (I heard university officials talking about that on a podcast earlier this week)--I don't really think Missouri is a fit in the SEC, but they're getting more $ all the way around because of it and it will help them in all areas. I like that in a way, the game reflects that too--improve your football team, become a nationally recognized name on the football landscape, and your university gains, which makes your university attractive to both the guys who just want to play and the guys who want to play and care about the academic standing.************************ What's I don't like:Heisman challenge--this is pretty lame. You can play as one of several former Heisman winners, putting them on any team you want. But there's nothing really special about them--it's just some guy with Sanders on the back of his jersey, not really different than any other RB with decent attributes, you can say you're playing Barry Sanders, but it doesn't feel any different, so why do it? The challenges make things kind of fun--you have to hit certain targets during the season like rushing yards or TD catches (depending on the position of the Heisman player you are) but they could have done this without the Heisman history tie-in. You also have the ability to slow down a play for a few seconds, giving you the chance to scan the field for what you want to do--again, cool, but they could have done it without the lame Heisman history tie in.Top 25 polls are still pretty bad. I took a team ranked in the bottom 6 before the season started. Adjusted their schedule so they played 5 ranked teams in the first 5 games (#20,#4,#3,#1,#14)--I beat them all, by double digits, my rank after 5 weeks--#19. Really? Even though polls in real life are flawed, there's no way you could end up #19 with that on your resume after 5 weeks--3 of the teams I beat were still ranked higher than I was.Apparently no college QB is ever taught how to pass over the LB and in front of the DB, they don't learn how to do that until the get to the pros--because all they do in this game is throw it 7 ft. off the ground (even if you lob it) and the LB barely has to jump to deflect or intercept. Oh wait, college QBs know how to pass over LBs, just not college QBs that are programmed by EA Sports.Too much forced animation after plays are over--once the whistle blows I should be able to hit X and get right to the play calling screen, I don't care about how cool your programming skills are, I don't need to see it for 4 seconds after every play, especially while the play clock and game clock are ticking. What the heck happened to the 'Chew Clock' option--who at EA thought that was ok to get rid of?Road To Glory still suffers from not allowing you to pick the plays for your side of the ball and you'll find the team likes to do the opposite of your position (be a WR on a team that usually passes and suddenly the computer calls running plays 75% of the time). Your best bet is always to be the QB that way you have the option to audible (so that you're not calling a play that has all receivers going deep when you're first and goal on the 4, or HB Toss on 3rd and 14).I hate that the game still moves the punt returner away from the ball if the punt is going to land inside the 15--I can call fair catch or move him away if I want to, I'm supposed to be in control of the player. If I want to field the punt on the 2 and run with it that should be my call--but the game still moves the guy even if you have control over him, then you have to try and get him back in place in time to catch the ball if that's what you want to do. This has been an EA problem as far back as I can remember--can no one fix this?Absurd animation/programming on blocked extra-points/field goals--if you can get past the line all you need to do is have your player come into contact with the holder before the ball is kicked. Then every one just stands there and the announcers say the kick was blocked. Just awful. The logic on the announcers still needs to be tweaked--on the second play of the game I sack the QB and they mention how my DT has been in the backfield all game long.**************** Overall:This is still one of the best titles out there in all of sports and I'm glad to have it--I'm also glad I long ago skipped out on buying each year's new release, upgrading after a 3 year break in buying made it enjoyable because many things had changed in that time. EA has definitely built a great franchise with NCAA, although you get the feeling (especially with the really sad reach they did with the Heisman Challenge) that they're running out of ideas on how to do anything new besides a few graphical and menu options each year. Perhaps if you get this you can wait until 2016 to see if they've found something new to do. If you have 2012, I don't know if this is worth buying. If you're new to NCAA or haven't purchased it in the last few years this is a good one to have.

Game works great still no crashing or freezing

*by A***R on Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2023*

Kinda can’t believe the game really works, it came in great condition, no scratches on the disk at all, also showed up two days early. I played close to 4 hours already and the game has not crashed once or any problems so far!

EA Sports Fine Tunes The NCAA Series

*by B***S on Reviewed in the United States on July 12, 2012*

This year's NCAA offering doesn't have any major new features other than playing as one of several Heisman winners in the game. Game play has been tweaked, especially passing. In game updates have been added and the lighting is a little more realistic. But compared to

Madden NFL 13

and its totally new physics system and all new Connected Careers, little has been done other than smooth some edges. One of the things that Tiburon, the EA owned Studio that puts out NCAA and Madden games, did was make the menu look even more like the graphics seen on Saturdays during ESPN's college football presentations. Another is further tweaking of light levels using something called HDR (high dynamic range) methods to make the fields look more like you see on game day. One of the things they added was an in game update to other games. This happens in dynasty games. The only thing is that its all canned and made up when you advance the week. So if you are playing in an offline dynasty and decide to play some games other than your team's that week, those scores won't show up on the ticker or be in any of the updates of later games. That, to me, is disappointing. Perhaps if they do NCAA like Madden where you have to play up to that game, and all games prior have been played, they could add game scores for games the user has played. One thing EA has done again, unfortunately, is left out many features and you have to pay for them as DLC. A few versions back, you could be the commish of up to 5 online dynasties. You can still now, as long as you pay EA for it. For $20 you can buy all the extras, details are in the game under the areas that they are available, such as Recruiting Advisor in online and offline dynasties. You can still edit rosters and on day one I found a roster that was pretty accurate to the real life players.Overall, the new passing is nice, but it won't blow you out of the water. Play action works a little better because you have better blocking and the qb moves faster.Updates coming up are supposed to include some free uniforms such as for Rutgers. If that turns out to be true, it will be a first, something FREE from Tiburon/EA in an update!Overall, its a fun and the upgrades, most of them at least, are good additions to the game. The game ratings are suspect again though. Remember that the studio that does this game has a student internship program with UCF so you will see some bias there toward them and against schools they don't like such as USF. They actually rated USF the second worse team in Florida and the worse in the Big East when preseason Athlon, Phil Steele and Andre Ware have them winning the conference. FIU is rated in the 80s so any set of team ratings that has Sun Belt teams rated much higher than BCS teams, you have to wonder how they came to these ratings. BUT, you can find rosters with better ratings online and they will start popping up shortly after release.Overall, a fun game. I have found I like a mode where you just Coach games which is almost as fun as watching a real game.
