Is the bulkhead threaded on the inside of one of the holes?

This particular bulkhead is socket on both ends.

Will this mate up to a standard garden hose fitting?

No, but you can get a 1/2" to garden hose adapter at Lowe's/Depot.

What is the diameter of the strainer? The bit that fits into the bulkhead!

it is the same diameter as 1/2" pvc which is about 7/8" of an inch when I measured it.
