How big is the clamp? Is it bigger than 4.5cm?

There is a 7 cm space between the "jaws" of the clamps. Very sturdy & quite heave. The best Keyboard Platform I've ever had.

What is the gap between the top of the tray and the underside of the desk?

It depends on the thickness of the desk. For me the space is 6,5 cm, and the desk is 3 cm thick.

Do the side tracks that the shelf sits out stick out in front of the desk all the time or do they slide back?

No -they go back with the tray.

Will this be suitable for a glass desk? I.e no screwing into the table required?

I have this clamped to a tempered glass desk and all ok so far!
