Why would anyone need a nearly $200 device to simply heat water for tea when you probably already have a microwave, stove top/electric kettle? Here is how I used to make tea: 1. Fill electric kettle and let it boil. ~5 minutes 2. pour over my tea and let steep. ~3-10 minutes depending on the type of tea. 3. Let tea cool enough for me to enjoy drinking it. ~10 minutes. So it would take me anywhere from 18-25 minutes to make some tea, and I did that several times a day, every day. Sometimes I'd want tea but didn't want to take the time to prepare it, or was thirsty and didn't want to have to wait to drink it. The kettle only heated to a boil so sometimes my good quality tea would come out bitter. So I splurged and purchased this expensive water warmer, and I tell you it is wonderful. Hot water is ready and waiting for me at any moment. It only uses about 14 watts to keep the water warm so after several months I haven't noticed any change in our electric bill. I have the temp set to 175 degrees and so none of my teas come out bitter anymore, and because the water doesn't have to cool down from boiling, I only have to wait a couple minutes before I can drink it. So tea prep time time is basically only as long as I choose to steep it. Plus, when the water reaches a boil after you refill it, it plays a little classical minuet. When you put it to sleep in the evening it plays "beautiful dreamer." You can set it to just beep at you if you want, but I think it is cute my tea kettle sings me a lullaby before bed. Also, don't by the cleaning tablets. Buy a 1lb bag of powder citric acid and use that instead. Waaaaay cheaper and works beautifully. There are instructions to use it online. Finally, I have used the hot water to make oatmeal, cream of wheat and to get ramen cooking faster. I still need to convince my SO to get rid of the kurig and switch to a french press using this things hot water. Much counter space would be saved as well as the money and waste from those k-cups. So, yes it is expensive. But if you drink more than one cup of tea a day, it is a well built, luxury item worth every penny.

****UPDATE**January 2019**** A family member came to visit and loved using my Zoji. He admitted to being spoiled after using it and he could never go back to boiling water the old fashioned way. I surprised him with this 5 liter model as a housewarming gift for his new home. *****UPDATE*****April 14th, 2016***** I would still recommend this product. I still love it and use it daily. Buy the citric acid cleaner when you get this boiler. The boiler does need to be cleaned more frequently if you have hard water like I do. I would definitely recommend the Zojirushi citric acid cleaner. It comes in a box with four packets. This is a must have. It is very easy to use. When you first use this boiler it will be silent until the alert sounds that your water is hot. You will notice that you can hear it working after the calcium deposits have built up. This is an indication that the boiler needs to be cleaned. My pot was coated with the white calcium deposits all up and down the inner walls. I dissolved three packets in a measuring cup filled with hot water, dumped that in the pot and filled it to the line with cold water and set it for cleaning mode. The instructions call for one packet. Also, be aware that there is a little inverted basket at the bottom of the pot. The instructions say to take this out and clean it buy hand. Mine is still coated with the water deposits after cleaning but is not clogged. I am considering replacing it if it happens to clog. I am still really happy with this purchase. ****Original review below***** Do not be intimidated by the large instruction booklet as I was. This product is very easy to use. I mastered how to use it after my first use. Easy peasy. I purchased the 5 Liter, stainless dark brown. I wasn't sure how this would look with my other stainless and black appliances. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it goes well without clashing with the other kitchen items. With shipping and tax my total came to just under $230. Well worth the price if I do say so myself. I have other high end kitchen appliances that I paid much more for and don't use daily or weekly. I have used this daily since it first landed on my doorstep March 15th, 2015. My well loved electric kettle had recently died after many years of service to me. I was looking to upgrade from my 6 cup kettle because I tend to use my hot water for cooking as well as tea or coffee. The convenience of not having to choose whether to make a cup a tea or to begin cooking my dinner with the water I just boiled will definitely not be missed. I refill this at least 2x a day. On my day off I have been known to refill the pot 3 to 4x. I first came across the Zojirushi brand when I was considering the purchase of a small bread maker I had seen on a shopping channel. I went on to read the reviews about that bread maker and found them all to be highly favorable. Everyone seemed to enjoy the bread maker. Later I went and explored their website and found Zojirushi made a host of other products. I found more reviews speaking in favor of other products they manufactured. It was a no brainer to go with this water boiler. I am very happy with my purchase.

We had a different thermal water boiler for about ten years, and found it extremely handy. I had been strongly tempted to get a Zojirushi before, but wasn't sure how much we would use it. In fact, we got quite spoiled, always having water available to make hot beverages, and had to refill it at least once a day, in addition to at bedtime, as we're both retired now, so we knew we wanted one with a larger volume. I also wanted it to be tall enough that I could fit one of my Zojirushi tea carriers under the spout. This size seemed ideal, and so far it's met and exceeded all of our expectations. First, it comes up to temperature amazingly quickly if you set it to do so. It will also come to temperature as slowly as you want if you fill it before going to bed, and set the timer; and you can set it to thermal, and let the vacuum insulation keep the water hot. The water gauge is easy to read once you get the hang of it. We have only needed to refill it once except at bedtime, although we're both getting hot beverages throughout the day and evening. The thermostat reading verifies that it has always kept the water at the chosen temperature. We love the tunes it plays, which could be changed to simple beeps or turned off, but as my husband says, it's a cheerful little thing, and we enjoy hearing it. I think the only feature we haven't used is the self-cleaning cycle, as that hasn't been needed yet. My only complaint is that 185ºF, which is the best choice for a few of my teas, is not one of the temperature selections; however, that is attainable by cooling 195ºF water through pouring from another vessel to my teapot, so that is really not a major concern. However, I've also discovered that if I keep the water boiler set to 175ºF, I can then set it to 195ºF and choose Quick Temp to bring it up to 185ºF amazingly rapidly, then reset it to 175ºF. I have been reading other reviewers experiences, with some being very unfavorable, so I thought I would share our experience. We purchased our current 4.2 liter unit in December of 2017 (it's January 2026 now). It is the CV-DCC40XT and according to the lid, it was made in Japan. It is still going strong with no issues to the seals, boiler or plastic parts. It is plugged in all day every day so the water is always ready to go. When we remember, we will put it to sleep at night, but that probably only happens about half the time. (It should go without saying, but never, ever let this unit run out of water.) We clean the unit on a regular basis. What that means is when the interior of the pot gets a white calcium coating on it, it gets cleaned. You can see it building up against the grey color of the pot. Mind you, it's not a little amount, but it's also not a heavy crust. At this point it gets cleaned with citric acid using the machine's cleaning cycle. Depending on water hardness, the buildup can occur much more frequently than in a softer water environment. In fact, at our previous house, we would occasionally clean it twice in a row due to the very hard water buildup. When done cleaning, it should look like new. It's not hard work, you just need to run through the cleaning cycle and wait. We purchase citric acid in 5lb bags (which is way cheaper than the little packets) and use 2 tbsp for each cycle. We may clean it once a month or in the soft water environment of our current house, it will get cleaned every 4 months. It just depends on the calcium buildup. In regards to some of the horror stories I've read in some these reviews, it's hard to know the conditions in which the unit is being used. It's obviously also possible that the quality of the product's materials has changed. When I did a search on google, calcium can have negative effects on plastic. I have not experienced this. When I opened the lid on our unit today to see if there were issues, everything looked brand new. In summary, we love this unit and it's a workhorse. Keep it clean with citric acid and never let it run out of water. When our current unit dies, we will probably buy another one. Hopefully, it will work just as well and the manufacturer will not cheapen the quality of materials.

This thing is awesome! Four liters of boiling hot water (at my choice of temperature: 208, 195, 175, or 260 degrees F) always ready to dispense on my countertop. It heats up very fast to boil the water then it lets it cool to your selected temperature and keeps it there. It has insulated walls for energy efficiency. A quiet pump quickly dispenses a stream of hot water or you can remove the lid and just tip and pour out larger quantities. I use this all the time to make tea, hot soup, or anything else that calls for boiling hot water. Zojirushi is known for making top-quality reliable appliances and this water boiler is no exception! It has a self-cleaning mode and the directions tell you to add their cleaning powder (sold separately) and run the self-cleaning cycle to descale the inside. But just use citric acid crystals instead of their proprietary powder--that's the same thing, but much cheaper. And it really works! Add the crystals, run the cleaning cycle, dump out and rinse--all the lime scale is gone! A water boiler is a fantastically handy kitchen appliance and this one is the top model. It's pricier than others but remember, you get what you pay for. I had a cheap one previously that died after a couple years. This one is four years old and looks and works like the day I got it. It makes a fantastic gift, too--perfect for newlyweds, college students, anyone!

I bought a 4 L model of this same type of dispenser decades ago. Honestly, it was around the turn of the century, and I've been using it daily over all that time. I replaced the lid once, about 10 years ago, and the body of it kept on working. Eventually, after using it way past its suggested lifetime, it finally came time to replace it, and I was pleased to see that there was a larger 5 L model, and this one has some more advanced features that help to save energy, like a timer that lets you turn off the heating element for a certain number of hours overnight, quick heating mode, etc. Very pleased with the new model, and very satisfied with the brand. Highly recommended! 👍

I love this thing, whenever I want it I have boiling hot water(not literally a rolling boil) to make my black tea with. No longer do I have to heat my electric kettle, wait for it, forget it, heat it up again, and then make tea. I do however still need the kettle as this is only useful for water at a single temperature, so while it does offer temps for oolong, green, and white teas, it takes longer for the water to cool to that temp. Another note for tea drinkers, if you really want your tea to taste perfect this may not be the best for you. This is because scale build up has been found to have an effect taste of the tea, I have read this as well as noticed it myself after descaling my kettle(prior to reading about it). While the vacuum hybrid version is a significant jump in price, I think it's worth the claimed power savings for a device that is on most of the day. And on power savings, the timer feature is nice, however it could certainly be modernized with a clock based feature. Otherwise you have to remember each night or day to set the timer before you leave or go to bed. Like some, I was a bit weary of the teflon coating, you'd understand if you knew about DuPont and perfluorooctanoic acid. However I gave in as there appears to be only one Zojirushi water boiler that does not use it, and I have hard water so I figured it may help prevent some of that from sticking. On that note, if you have hard water my suggestion, each time you need to refill, just empty it. After that toss a little more water in to swish around and dump again then wipe the sides. Also every maybe 4 or so refills check the mesh filter, most build up on that can be washed off while squeezing it a little.

Had one for unknown how long. Until it stops boiling. Bought another one June 19 2017 !!! Still boiling. Just ordered new lid seal packing for top . This things are superior !!! But them while you can.

The boiler took over two weeks to arrive and then once I opened it to try it the electric plug is defective and it blew up the device and obviously it didn’t work at all!! This is so disappointing from this Japanese brand as I didn’t expect that at all from this brand because we have an old one which is so good and has been working for years, we only fixed it once with a minor thing.

EDIT June 23, 2020: Hi. It still works wonderfully. I actually read the manual a few months ago and found out several things: how to clean the machine and how to turn off the Timer chime. To turn off the timer to either be a long beep or to be turned off, hold the Unlock button one or two times respectively. Speaking about cleanup, Zojirushi recommends citric acid, specifically their citric acid packs. But I highly recommend to just get some citric acid powder (either on Amazon or your bulk store or wherever) and use that instead. The Zojirushi packs are literally the same thing. Save yourself the money! I personally use two to three heaping tablespoons. To activate the cleaning mode after putting the citric acid, hold the Reboil button. I have not gotten a single rusting or coating issue since I got it. With the cleaning method above, it makes it good as new. ---- This was the first Zojirushi product we got for the house. Not only was it the first Zojirushi product, it was also the most expensive kitchen appliance I've ever bought. So, was it worth it? This water boiler keeps water hot for an indefinite period of time, as long as the unit is plugged in. This is in contrast to kettles which you usually need to turn on and then wait. This means that for this Zojirushi, it has made instant noodles, tea bags, instant coffee, hot chocolate, you name it... pretty much instant. Whenever the craving comes up, you have hot water available at your disposal. I have the 5 litre model and the first thing I have to say is: This thing is tall! If you have a small family, I definitely recommend the smaller model! With 5 litres, you have some advantages and disadvantages. As far as I know, the larger capacities have better thermal insulation since they use vacuum insulation technology. Basically, there is a little gap in between the exterior wall and the interior water of the reservoir that has as much air removed as possible, meaning very little heat can get out. Additionally, as physics will tell you, more water means more thermal energy so it will naturally cool down slowly than say, a 2 litre model. Considering both of these points, I just didn't really care about the energy costs associated with this, to be honest. The insulation is very impressive, if it is the same as the Zojirushi travel mugs. Of course, with a larger size means you won't be refilling it as often. If you have a large household, a large model might be necessary, not optional. But of course, larger capacities means it takes up more space on your countertop. (Small people might find it difficult to use, especially when refilling.) You get a pretty "industrial" product, in my opinion, versus the flowery, glossy white models of the smaller ones. And of course, (again with the physics!), more water means it needs more time to get to temperature! As with all Zojirushi water boilers, you have temperature control in Fahrenheit, from boiling 212, 208, 195, 175, 160, and no heating/vacuum only. When the device unplugs, it sticks with 195. You have the option to reboil the water back to 212 or target a specific temperature only. To dispense water, you must unlock it and then press dispense. Handy safety feature. Additional safety feature: magnetic plug. Another safety feature: Lid clamps shut. Another safety feature. A handy handle so you don't burn your hands. Obviously, the water will go up easier than go down, so plan your day for what drink you will be having, like tea day, or hot chocolate day. Dispensing water can be normal speed or slow for drip coffee purposes or for a smaller, precise dispense. You can put the boiler to sleep for a maximum of 8 hours. If you are REALLY looking at reducing energy usage, you can do this before you go to sleep. The Zojirushi doesn't do it automatically. Again, the efficiency of this device makes this a really negligible issue. Now, some caveats of the product. First, if you want a huge amount of water at one time, I honestly recommend you just boil some water on the stove. The efficiency you gain with boiling in this device will only hurt you with how slow it will dispense. (And IT IS NOT SAFE TO POUR IT OUT FROM THE LID, so don't try. ) So, this will suffice for small recipes and of course, drinks and instant hot meals. But for large batches of pasta? Keep that kettle for those instances or just boil some salted water. To dispense water, obviously, um... it has to be plugged in. I know, I know, petty point but it's true. More likely a safety feature. Water splatter. I've learned to live with it but since the Zojirushi is so tall, I don't have as much choice as to hold the cup close to the spout. So, yeah, water splatter will get on your fingers and hurt. You get used to it. Lastly, the singing. It was cute the first few times, but I will honestly say now: IT IS ANNOYING. When the Zojirushi finishes boiling, it sings a song. Honestly, you probably won't hear it too much since it is a 5 litre model, but it is especially annoying at night, the ideal time to refill it, and it makes the tune after 20 minutes. Sigh. It's a con because you cannot turn it off. --- This is the part of the review where I answer the underlying question: is this worth it? Consider all the times you use the kettle. Are you a tea fanatic? Are you a instant noodle person? I honestly recommend it if you are. If you are a single or double, maybe opt for a smaller model? If you are a Canadian, hot drinks are pretty much my preference TBH and this is even better if you drink hot drinks year round! But if you have a coffee maker and make the occasional tea or whatnot, skip this. You only buy a Zojirushi rice cooker if you REALLY love rice. This is for the hot drink enthusiasts. Not for the spaghetti boilers. Maybe keep around your kettle for that. Ultimately, you are paying for convenience from a REPUTABLE company with YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. Plus, it's MADE IN JAPAN. Not even my Zojirushi travel mug is made in Japan. This is the only Made in Japan product I own and it's the real deal. From a person who had to replace their electric water kettle over 5 times in the course of their lifetime, I have no worries that this might break on me or cause a fire or whatnot. And that is impressive because this is constantly on and has more moving parts than any other kettle. So yeah. Great product with a great function (if you use it often) from a REPUTABLE company. What else do I need to say?

I love my Zojirushi and am so glad I went for the big 5 litre size! At first, I was hesitant, because I wondered if it would be TOO big (I’m single and live alone), but I think it’s great! It doesn’t take up a lot of counter space, I always have it on, and if figure that if I ever have a party or company, then I’ll be glad I opted for the larger size! (The larger size also means that I don’t have to bother filling it up as often!) Setup is super easy and this machine is very simple to use. I like the magnetic cord which makes it easy to plug and unplug, and I like the various temperature settings. I also think the carrying handle can come in handy and the swivel feature is great, too! It’s so convenient now to be able to make coffee or tea or have hot water for my instant soups without having to wait to boil water in a kettle. It means I can have multiple cups without the hassle. I only wish that the inner pot was removable so that I could easily take that to the sink and wash it out. That would have been great - Not sure why they didn’t make it removable! Another concern I’d had before buying this was the “dark brown” lid color. I’d been hoping for something that was totally black or even dark grey since those colors would be sleeker and fit in with my kitchen and other kitchen appliances better. (I didn’t understand why this company would choose to use brown as the lid as brown would make it look so...1980s!) But I was relieved that when this product arrived, the “dark brown” color isn’t noticeably brown...It practically looks black. It looks good! I’m happy with this product, and fully recommend it! The price is a little extravagant, but this is a product I will get lots of use out of and the convenience makes it worth it to me!

Truly I don't know if any one item has ever changed my life as much as this hot water heater. I really didn't think I needed this when my old kettle finally bit the dust because 1) kettles have always been just fine for me and 2) it is pricier than other models, but let me tell you, this thing IS WORTH IT. My finace and I use this bad boy at least 6 times a day because we both love our coffee and tea and for any miscellaneous uses. Need to make some broth and only have powdered bouillon? Boom, instant soup. Just want a single cup of hot water to clean out the drain? Immediately sparkling. We've had the 4L version for 6 months now and it's still perfect, it takes about 10 minutes to heat up the full 4L to 208 degrees and you even get rewarded with a fun little song when it's ready. If you're even considering it, get it.
