which one is the lockshield? identical from outside, but the mechanism to restrict water is different.

Small screwed cap on top of lock shield, adjust valve with a small adjustable.

None of my Allen keys fit the lockshield. Any ideas what size it is? I thought it would be a standard 12mm radiator hex key but it’s smaller

I used a flat headed screwdriver,it worked well for me.

I think it’s 1/2” They come with a new inserts which have to be screwed into the radiator. My rads had the old big brass unions on which you have to remove. I had a square shanked Allen key which jammed inside the old union and then you could get some leverage with a small Slilson. The old valves had been in service since the seventies, so pleased when they unscrewed.

is this sold as two normal valves, or is one of them a genuine lock shield (i.e. cannot be adjusted without spanner)?

Once the caps have been pulled off the valves need some kind of hexagonal Allen key to be adjusted. Not fitted these valves myself yet. They can’t be adjusted with the caps. You will need an Allen key!!
