Why an open seam, about 5 inches long, along the left side seam as if a side pocket were meant to go here--but, there is no side pocket? just a hole.

It’s so you have easier access to your pants pockets if you are wearing pants with pockets so you don’t have to undo the whole lab coat just to get to your pockets
