Longtime reader's opinion
I am giving the book 5 stars as a fan who has read every book of the series. I have seen someone talk about how it would not be a good stand alone and spoilers etc. Quite frankly if your a reader looking to get your feet wet I wouldn't say not to read this but remember this series has gone on for a long time. I would highly recommend going back and starting from the beginning whether you choose to start with the 3 books Salvatore started with in the series or the beginning of Drizzt timeline for the 3 books that came after the Crystal shard trilogy. Bob always has vivid battle descriptions and character fighting descriptions. They have always been fantastic. This book delivers in typical R.A. Salvatore fashion. Can a longtime reader feel a repeat from the first Obould wars? Probably so but I was able to read the difference and get entwined in the struggles. I have not read anything else throughout this timeline in the Forgotten Realms to know what happened to Lady Alustriel. She was mentioned in name in this book but when Cattie was taken by the spell plague it was at a time when her and Drizzt were traveling back and forth from Silvery Moon to Mithril Hall as she studied the ways of the weave of magic. Personally I am curious as to what happened there as the spell scars of Cattie Brie would be intriguing side story but that may be entwined to some other author or a part of the timeline I am not aware of with the original collapse of the weave and Allustriel as 1 of the 7 sisters. That is a long side discussion taking me off point. Back to this book though realistically we all knew that the orcs would be defeated. It just makes more sense in this way and eventually the reputation of Bruenor will be restored. Some complaints you see are the same old drow and their role in the conflict. It is pretty simple in the first war you had a group of 3 Drow (if I recall correctly) while this conflict had a lot more drow influence but not for the fun of a few drow just causing chaos but for the struggle of power in Menzo and House Baerne. The conflict of Lloth vs Mielikki for Drizzt although this book was more to the reputation of the Drizzt name on the surface but the conflict for the soul of Drizzt continues on without mention. Lloth's intention of Drizzt expanded to the quest for power of the weave. Yes we know Bruenor will be vying to reclaim Gauntlgrym from the Drow family currently within but there is more than just that to the story. The role Jarlaxle played in the book is typical Jarlaxle and he has an angle of benefitting him but it is more than that. You have seen this building for some time where Jarlaxle goes to the Shade Enclave in grand fashion to save Entreri and Drizzt. Even further back in the Servant of the Shard timeline. You have discovered and I forget which of the books more recent it was learned the deep friendship Jarlaxle had with Zaknafein. While Jarlaxle is very chaotic his spirit was much like Zaknafeins was and as time goes on he longs for his lost friend of Drizzts father and he sees a lot of Zak in Drizzt even if Drizzt is more goodly than his father was. Jarlaxle of course looks to prosper his band of mercenaries especially with Kimmurel as co leader but you just see that side of Jarlaxle that really deep down is doing all this for Drizzt. As the time keeps going you see it growing. Now with all that said the part that really brought the grin to my face and why I am sticking with a full 5 stars is the role of Gromph himself. Over the years we all know Gromph is considered the most powerful male in the Drow society but his role was so unknown. Sure he was the head of Sorcere but other than that you just knew the name and that Drow are scared of the old arch mage but in this codex series you have seen more from Gromph and it really was shed to light and how he allowed everything Jarlaxle did and why he allowed it. Maybe it was too easy and you could see it coming but once I read it I was like finally Gromph showed his personality and his own ability at playing the puppet master quietly without raising any suspicion. I hope to see more of the Arch mage going forward. In conclusion Salvatore has laid the groundwork at the same time as cleaning up the story with the Orcs for the future. He can spin stories so many different directions. We know Bruenor will reclaim Guantlgrym. We know there is a struggle for the weave not just with the Gods but in the society of Drow that Gromph appears will do anything to keep the drow females out to maintain his level of power in a Drow society where males are bottom feeders and the path of Jarlaxle remains whatever Jarlaxle wants it to be. It is still unknown what was in it for the Dragon Sisters as they are dragons after all and do things for gain and nothing has shown thus far where their profit is coming from. I cannot wait for the next book and the direction or directions R.A takes us but rest assured I will be along for the ride.

People were wrong about this book
Great story telling and Combat descriptions. This book has everything that make fantasy great. I don't want to reveal spoilers, So all I say that if you have been on this journey with the companions of the hall from the beginning, you are going to really enjoy this book. There are parts that I'm tired of waiting for but I can wait. There are things I would've liked to be a little different, but I'm still happy with how things went. This story was action packed and it went from a very low point to a complete 180 in the span of like 3 chapters. It was all war but a fantasy war, with orcs, dwarves, elves, ogres, dark elves, frost giants and finally dragons, all in battle. It was truly epic. Some readers want these characters to be something they are not. They are real characters who dwell in a very rich world. They are not going to just leave wear they live, just because people tire of them fighting the same types of enemies. I have come to see this just is not going to happen. Everything with these characters stems from where they choose to live. It's their home so the enemies are going to stay the same. There is nothing wrong with that, and it makes these characters more human and realistic. They don't go searching the land looking to slay evil, the protect their home from it.I'm glad some characters were not in this book, it gives me something to look forward to in the future with these characters. I just finished and I am a happy satisfied reader.

Again, best book in the series to date!
Wow. Beautiful book, and once again, Salvatore does not disappoint.Following the story of his fan-beloved dark elf, Drizzt, and the Companions of the Hall, Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf- a title that gives you shivers of anticipation, honestly- tracks the Companions in their quest to defeat the armies raised against the region of the Silver Marches. The armies of the Kingdom of Many-Arrows, reinforced by frost giants and drow allies, have swept the region, and hold it at the brink of collapse. Once again, it's up to Drizzt and friends to save the day, but they won't be doing it alone. No, this time, they must rally the entire region to work together, and with the help of some rather unexpected allies. The battle scenes are as intense as anything Salvatore's ever written, with the added bonus of immense scaled battles. Salvatore excelled before with individual combat, and that's still apparent here in Vengeance of the Iron Dwarf. What's most amazing is the intrigue that he's able to work in with the massive troop maneuvers. It is on par with anything written by George R.R. Martin or, dare I say, Robert Jordan. The plotline and dialogue are very well flushed out, and give true, round personalities to both major and minor characters. It astounded me, how the characters all felt so tangible, in so little time, and in so few words. Most authors would spend twice the words to bring a character so vividly to life on the page. It truly is amazing, what Salvatore was able to do in such a short time. Intrigue always three layers deep (or more), we are led on such a merry chase of who's-betraying-who, and who-stands-for-what that, even outside of battle, the book is near impossible to put down. This book, as every other from the series, was well worth the wait and well worth the money. Which also leaves us fans waiting with 'bated breath in the hopes that someone will come along with a movie or television adaptation, and wondering too, if there's anyone in the business talented enough to bring this level of literature to the silver screen and still do it justice.

Entertaining
Interesting plot and war narrative by Salvatore, a little bit weak at the end though. Is an entertaining book and I am going to buy next series to see what happens next. Thanks for reading this comment.

Another great book from R.A. Salvatore
More great adventures, fights and moving storyline in the best style from Bob Salvatore, after so many books the one question I keep on asking myself is How does he do it, the story is neverending and continues without any sence of being pressed...
