DK Eyewitness Italy

Being frequent travellers, DK guidebooks have become an essential part of our planning, we've bought many of them over the years. This one is just as informative as all the others, a real gem of a book. We're looking to do a journey through Italy in the summer South to North - this book has already repaid the cost of purchase in helping us with our planning. Brilliant travel book

Another gorgeously illustrated travel guide from DK. Ticks all the boxes, interesting to read, lovely photos. Great for research before you go.

I've been using DK Eyewitness as my favoured guides for some years now, much preferring their format to that of rivals such as L*n*ly Pl*n*t and Ro*gh Gu*d*s. The appearance has changed considerably in the last year, and this is the first of the new format I have had which is an update of a previous edition which I have from 10 years ago, and so it's the first time I've been able to make a direct comparison. These newer editions do feel like there's been a cost saving going on - the covers feel less durable and the paper of lesser quality - you don't get glossy photos and pictures like you did previously. Much of the text for individual entries seems to be identical in content, but then there's not much reason for them to change, but the layout has changed considerably. Maps are clearer and in general it's less fussy and crowded and I think overall much better presented. (One thing I noted mapwise though - the map of Venice vaporetti routes in the earlier edition is no longer there.) Overall a welcome update, though unless you are on a driving or railway tour throughout the country you may be better off with one of the regional guides. For me it's going to be useful for deciding which part of Italy to visit next, and then investing in such a more local guidebook.

Some folks have been disappointed in the new look of the DK Eyewitness books - and I do miss the glossy paper that made for more vibrant colors - but I find the layout, “must see” suggestions, easy to read maps, recommendations for hotels and restaurants just as good as ever. Love this 2020 Italy guide...and it still includes plenty of those 3-D cut-aways of cathedrals and historic buildings that I absolutely love.

A Great travel guide packed with great, practical information, colour photos and illustrations. The DK eyewitness guides are the best travel books. I used to buy Lonely Planet or Fodors, but not since discovering these.

So we didn't get to go because of the "co" . Maybe next year. I love the dk travel books and have used them for Iceland, Ireland and a few other countries.

Updated from my old version, I buy this for the photo overview of different locations, very helpful.
