Best Baking Book I Have Found
I rarely write reviews, but had to for this book. I can't believe I never heard of this FABULOUS baking book before. Unbelievably great recipes and very suitable to the novice baker or the experienced baker. Easy to find ingredients and equipment. I guess it's just her vast knowledge of what works and what doesn't after her many years and her love of baking. It shows. Low cal? No. But you're making a dessert after all! I can't speak highly enough about this book. I will use it for years to come....as long as I can still bake! My boys are now 51 and 46 and I wish I had known about this book years ago....but it's never too late. They're grateful that I finally came across it and so am I! Every single recipe I have made has turned out incredible. Do yourself a favor and buy it used on Amazon (for some weird reason it's currently out of print) while you can. It'll get well used and probably stained anyway...This book makes baking fun again and the results are over the top.

No color pictures
This is a great book put out in 1991 and thus there are NO color pictures in it, only line drawings. I like that there are ideas for changing up a cake recipe to make it your own.

I've had a copy of this book for years and found all the recipes easy to follow and end products were delicious. This most recent purchase was for my grand daughter. I'm sure she'll enjoy using it as much as i .

I bought this for a friend that had admired my copy after I had made the sour cream chocolate cake with raspberry filling and white buttercream frosting. Years ago, in my youth, I lived down the street from the original Rosies bakery in Inman Square. In fact, one of my roommates worked there and often brought home "samples."This is a great cookbook, full of great dessert recipes. They aren't recipes that you will be using everday. But once in a while when you want to treat yourself or your friends to a real treat this is a go to cookbook. I especially like the chocolate recipes!

Recipes full of flavor satisfy a recipe hound
This cookbook is a winner! Now it may be over the top as far as calories, sugar and fat but the flavor and satisfaction are worth it. If you can limit yourself to small portions this is a great collection of recipes but, if you eat desserts like it is your job then you are in trouble. Some experts say we crave a wonderful treat and can be satisfied with just a small portion and I agree. The French do it marvelously. The sour cream chocolate cake is a dream. In fact everything I try from this book has been great. I borrowed it from the library so often I finally decided to just own a copy.

Scrumptious!
If you're going to have dessert, then have dessert. That said, why try to bake diet fudge cake? Ironically, these aren't actually the heaviest recipes I've read for desserts - the sour cream fudge layer cake (0kay I slipped in fat free sour cream with no harm!) is actually quite reasonable in the calorie department and fabulous. Oh, who am I kidding? This is no diet book, simply one of the very best baking books with foolproof recipes, explicit instructions, a friendly tone, and enough variety to please all. I recommend it as a classic for perfect baked goods. It has a place of honor on my shelf. Cookies, cakes, frostings...simply the best. Everyone will think you had a friendly grandma who taught you everything.

What is there to say? Chocolate, shortbread, more chocolate, lots of butter and cream. What could be bad? All the recipes are definitely doable, even for inexperienced bakers.
