DEWALT Router, Variable Speed, Fixed Base, 2-1/4 HP (DW618K) , Yellow

When I realized the single speed router I've used for years was inadequate for the larger diameter bits I now want to use, I started looking at variable speed routers. I settled on this. And I love it! *) Electronic variable speed control for a wide range of applications and the ability to reasonably maintain that speed under load. *) It is solid. The fixed base locks securely, and when unlocked allows for precise adjustments at 1/64" (marked) resolution. *) The fixed base works extremely well in a router table -- easy to see, access, and manipulate the height adjustment and speed dials. There really is nothing I don't like about this router. DeWalt has delivered an exceptional quality router for the price.

This router is made with great quality parts. The only downfall is the difficulty in adjusting your plunge depth. It's easy to adjust to deeper cuts but to adjust for a more shallow cut it is a pain. The adjustment ring does not want to move too freely when trying to move the motor housing and bit up.

after my old routers started given me problems decided to by a dewalt i have many dewalt tools and i have always loved them so no exception here great router quite and works so well

This is my second DeWalt router. I was thrilled with the first . It was a DW616. I have the plunge and “D” handle base and I will use them interchanged with the DW618. I also like the big DeWalt bag that came with it. I use it to store my extra base plates, cords, and collets. So far, this is my 7th DeWalt power tool in just 2 mos. of woodworking. I am through using junk. Now it is only the best that I will use.

If you are looking for a variable speed router for a router table, this is IMO the best candidate. First, it has a variable speed motor capable of the lower RPMs you'd need for using big cutters (like a raised panel cutter). Second, you can access both the RPM switch and the power switch from beneath the router table (assuming you mount the router in a way where these controls are oriented in the right direction). Third, you can adjust the height from beneath the router table pretty easily and pretty accurately. Fourth, it is built well, and it has plenty of power. Obviously it can do more, but for me I really just needed it for under the router table. I've been using it for about 1 month, and have no negatives. Changing out bits is easy (I'm used to DeWalt's system for this, which requires a single wrench and only a moderate amount of strength). It works.

I own two PC-690 routers which work great. Needing more power for my second router table I was spooked by so many recent negative reviews for PC routers. I went instead for the Dewalt DW618K and it works great. Very quiet, with smooth starts and stops. The extra 1/2 HP vs my PC-690 runs my large inlay bits no problem. According to the box, pieces of this router are made in three or more countries. It all works together great. The spiral depth adjust is better than on my old PC for under table use. The Dewalt uses a rotating jacking ring which leaves the body stationary. Not rotating the motor housing prevents power cord interference which happens with the PC. Comes with a nice tote bag, now I can take my Dewalt hammer drill out of the Hitachi bag.

I was expecting this to be a little wild to use as my smaller dewalt router is so loud and kicks around alot... but it's sooo smooth to use. It has very little vibration, the detachable power cord is nice and i'm taking apart everything in the house to add rounded edges and cool designs to it. The only thing I mistakenly thought was that the K designation was an upgraded model from the standard DW618, but it just means it's a kit that comes with the bag, centering tool, etc. In the end i'm glad I got it.

I have had Porter Cable routers for 30 years. They are no longer available so I did an internet search for the best router replacement available. My Porter Cable was a 1 3/4 HP unit so that was the size unit I was looking for. The Dewalt unit was the highest rated and I have other Dewalt tools that are outstanding. I bought the 1 3/4 HP but it arrived with no 1/2" collect. I did more homework and the 2 1/4 HP came with the 1/2" collect. I ordered the 2 1/4 HP unit that came with the storage bag. It arrived - with no 1/2" collect. If you buy the unit with the bag, apparently the 1/2" collect is not included. Somebody from Dewalt needs to explain to me why anybody would buy a 2 1/4 HP router to only use 1/4" router bits. I bought an off brand 1/2" collect off Amazon and it is hit and miss for alignment - the vibration can be excessive. I finally ordered a 1/2" collect direct from Dewalt for $36 delivered. I have not yet received it so I can't comment on whether that one will help or not. The fixed base does not fit square and not easy to adjust. Find another option.

Fantastic unit should have bought this along time ago tons of power

The router has ample power for my purposes, and served me well in my shop. However, the magnet ring (speed control) cracked, fell into the stator while in use, and the router essentially blew up. The router was well taken care of, and never dropped or abused. The cost to replace the components was greater than the cost of a new router.

As expected - quality DeWalt product - no complaints

This is a great quality item. I received the router, no kit, no attachments. Thought it came with other pcs as it said So Start Kit, thought it meant it had kit of sorts with it. Nothing only router came...
